The White Sand Beaches of Cozumel are not to be missed.

A traveler-friendly guide based on real experience, designed to help you relax, plan ahead, and make the most of your next sailing.

Planning for your Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) vacation should feel exciting—not overwhelming. As a travel advisor who has sailed and booked with NCL, I want to share practical, experience-driven tips to help you navigate your trip with confidence. These insights come from firsthand travel experience.

Every ship and itinerary is a little different, so always double-check your NCL app and your specific sailing details—but these general tips will give you a strong head start.

Before You Sail

Check In Online Early

Complete your online check-in as soon as it opens. This makes embarkation day much quicker and ensures your boarding documents are accurate.

Luggage Tags & Delivery

Your boarding documents will include printable luggage tags with specific colors.

  • Attach these if you'd like NCL to deliver your bags to your stateroom.

  • Delivery can take several hours, so keep medications, swimsuits, and essentials in your carry-on.

  • On the final night, bags for assisted disembarkation are typically placed outside your stateroom around 10:00 PM.

Upgrades Through the App

Once you download the NCL App, you may see offers to upgrade your stateroom. Travelers who want more space sometimes find great value here.

Dining Tips & Reservations

Premium Dining Reservations

You can book non-complimentary (specialty) dining:

  • Before your trip through the NCL app

  • Onboarding day at the concierge station on Deck 6 outside Le Bistro

Cancellation Policy

  • Specialty dining cancellations within 2 hours of your reservation incur a $10 per person charge.

Ordering Specialty Meals in Advance

Guests with dietary needs can request meals a day ahead. Chefs do their best to accommodate, but advanced meals can sometimes take longer—so patience helps.

Make Friends with the Maitre D’

This is real insider advice: crew members rotate between venues. When they recognize you and know your preferences, the dining experience becomes even more seamless and personalized.

Spa & Wellness

Service Charges & Tipping

All spa treatments automatically include a 20% service charge. Some attendants may still hint for additional gratuities—common in the industry—but you should feel comfortable tipping only what feels appropriate for you.

Cancellation Policy

Spa services not canceled within 24–48 hours may incur a 50% cancellation fee. Check your confirmation details for the exact window on your sailing.

Thermal Suite Access

NCL offers a Thermal Suite pass for a one-time fee valid for your entire cruise. At the time of my last sailing, this was $199, but prices may change.

Onboard Charges & Essentials

Your Freestyle Keycard

This card is everything onboard:

  • Room key

  • Onboard account

  • Activity check-ins

  • Dining reservations

  • ID for reboarding at ports

Carry it anytime you leave your room—and pair it with a government ID when you go ashore.

Service Charges (Daily Gratuities)

If you didn’t prepay your daily service charges, they will appear on your onboard bill around 24 hours before disembarkation. These are typically $20 per guest, per day (subject to change).

Water Packages

Even without the More at Sea beverage package, you can purchase bottled water for your stateroom. Recent pricing:

  • 12 bottles – $19.95

  • 24 bottles – $34.95

  • 48 bottles – $49.95(Prices may vary by ship and sailing.)

Laundry Services

Many NCL ships offer wash-and-fold service. On my sailing, a full bag was $34 with a 48-hour turnaround.

Entertainment & Activities

  • The Main Theater (Deck 7, Forward) features nightly shows with rotating performers.

  • Headliners Comedy Club (Deck 6, Midship) offers different comedians nightly—earlier shows tend to be more family-friendly.

  • The Supper Club is complimentary but requires reservations; your Keycard acts as your ticket.

If You Can’t Get a Reservation

Arrive 10 minutes before showtime—unclaimed reservations are released to standby guests.

Daily Schedule in the App

Your NCL app becomes your activity hub:

  • Bingo

  • Game shows

  • Dance parties

  • Fitness classes

  • Trivia

  • And more

It’s also where you’ll connect to ship WiFi.

Time Zones May Change

Depending on your itinerary, the ship may adjust time en route. Always check the app and clocks onboard.

Shore Excursions: What to Expect at Each Port

The experience varies by destination. Here’s what past NCL travelers often encounter:

Cozumel

Check in, wait in a large group area, and board transportation to your excursion. Organization varies based on ship volume.

Costa Maya

Similar process to Cozumel but tends to be more organized and built for high-volume crowds.

Roatán

Expect a more fast-paced environment. The port is enclosed, and guests are brought by van to excursions just outside the secured area. There is dining and shopping inside, but it becomes crowded quickly when multiple ships dock.

Harvest Caye (Belize)

One of the most organized NCL destinations.

  • Expect a long walk from the ship to the island (transports available but lines form fast).

  • Features a beach, a large family-friendly pool, shopping, dining, and activities.

  • Checking excursion procedures the night before can help avoid delays.

Excursion Tickets & Wristbands

  • If pre-purchased, printed excursion tickets are often placed in your stateroom.

  • Many ports issue wristbands; keep them on until your excursion is fully complete.

Photography & Memories

Professional photographers are stationed throughout the ship and at scenic backdrops.

  • Photo packages can be purchased onboard.

  • Kiosks allow you to view and select prints/downloads.

  • Private photo sessions are available at additional cost.

Final Featherlight Travel Tips

  • Check your boarding documents carefully.

  • Download the NCL app before sailing.

  • Review cancellation policies for dining, spa, and excursions.

  • Carry your Freestyle Keycard and a photo ID in port.

  • Be patient with processes—every ship and port handles crowds differently.

A cruise is meant to be enjoyed slowly, intentionally, and with a spirit of adventure. If you ever feel unsure, I’m here to help guide you through each step before and during your journey.
